New Perpetual Format

The big change is here. Wanderings is now in an online-only perpetual format. That means more to see on the Fiction and Poetry pages and no more archive section. Each story or poem will be posted in the appropriate section for its full six month run.

A new comment feature is being added to the new postings. Rather than going into the message board to leave comments about a story or poem, you can leave your comments right at the bottom of the posting. We hope this will encourage more feedback for those writers whose work makes it into the magazine.

Print Edition Closing

Nothing good lasts forever, and the print edition of Wanderings is no exception. It is with great regret that I announce that the next issue, Autumn 2008, will be the last print issue of the magazine. Unfortunately, printing and postage costs continue to rise and it has come to a point where we simply can no longer afford the expenses the printed magazines incur.

Take heart, though. The online presence of the magazine will still continue and will improve in a number of ways. Without the restriction of a quarterly release schedule, stories can go up on the website very soon after they are accepted. We also have some exciting new features planned to make the website more interactive and more fun to visit on a day-by-day basis.

If you have any comments about this decision or ideas about how Wanderings should move forward, feel free to send me an email. My address is editor@wanderingsmag.com. Even better, drop by the message board and leave your thoughts there for everyone to share.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed creating a quality print magazine for the last four years, and I want to thank all of the discerning readers who have stuck with it and the wonderful writers who have contributed their stories to make Wanderings something worth reading. I hope you all stay with us on the web.

Editor for Hire

Mike Wever, the editor of Wanderings, is now making his editorial services available for all short story authors. Mike believes that quality editing should be available to short story writers as well as novelists, and he is providing his services at rates that won't make the editing process more expensive than the pay the short story can provide.

The proceeds from these editing services will help to support Wanderings magazine and contribute toward the goal of becoming a paying market. So if you are looking for someone to double-check your spelling, analyze your plot, and provide an honest, thoughtful opinion about your work, drop Mike a line.

See the editing services page for more information.

NOTE: There continues to be no charge to submit your work to Wanderings magazine. Those manuscripts that are accepted will be edited for the magazine at no charge, and Mike will continue to provide a few lines of his thoughts for those manuscripts that don't make it in.

New Publication Schedule

Wanderings magazine is going back to its roots. The experiment over the last few months in making Wanderings into a fee-based magazine has shown that in our case the challenges outweigh the benefits. Therefore, starting with the next issue, the magazine will once again be free to view on the website. Print copies of the current issue will continue to be available for a minimal charge.

At the same time, the editorial team has made the decision to produce Wanderings on a quarterly basis rather than monthly. Rather than twelve small issues a year, Wanderings will consist of four larger issues in January, April, July and October. This quarterly schedule will provide more time to fine tune the layout of each issue. Additionally, the increased number of stories per issue will make the printed copy a better value. The first quarterly issue will be the Autumn issue which will appear in October 2006.

The final change will be that Wanderings will no longer offer monetary payment for work published in the magazine. All those who have already been offered payment will receive it, but work accepted in the future will not be offered payment checks. Although we continue to believe that authors deserve to be compensated for their work, our current financial structure simply won't allow for it. For the time being, compensation will consist of the opportunity to receive a printed copy of the magazine in which the work appears for only the cost of shipping.

The editorial team would like to thank you for your continued interest in Wanderings, and we hope you will be with us when the first new issue rolls out in October.
